Digital halftoning by means of green-noise masks

چکیده
We introduce a novel technique for generating green-noise halftones—stochastic dither patterns composed of homogeneously distributed pixel clusters. Although techniques employing error diffusion have been proposed previously, the technique here employs a dither array referred to as a green-noise mask, which greatly reduces the computational complexity formerly associated with green noise. Compared with those generated with blue-noise masks, halftones generated with green-noise masks are less susceptible to printer distortions. Because green noise constitutes patterns with widely varying cluster sizes and shapes, the technique introduced here for constructing these green-noise masks is tunable; that is, it allows for specific printer traits, with small clusters reserved for printers with low distortion and large clusters reserved for printers with high distortion. Given that blue noise is a limiting case of green noise, this new technique can even create blue-noise masks. © 1999 Optical Society of America [S0740-3232(99)01807-4] OCIS codes: 100.0100, 100.2810.

Digital color halftoning with generalized error diffusion and multichannel green-noise masks
In this paper, we introduce two novel techniques for digital color halftoning with green-noise--stochastic dither patterns generated by homogeneously distributing minority pixel clusters. The first technique employs error diffusion with output-dependent feedback where, unlike monochrome image halftoning, an interference term is added such that the overlapping of pixels of different colors can b...
متن کاملRecent Advances in Digital Halftoning and Inverse Halftoning Methods
Halftoning is the rendition of continuous-tone pictures on displays, paper or other media that are capable of producing only two levels. In digital halftoning, we perform the gray scale to bilevel conversion digitally using software or hardware. In the last 3 decades, several algorithms have evolved for halftoning. Examples of algorithms include ordered dither, error diffusion, blue noise masks...
متن کاملAdvances in Technology of KODAK NEXPRESS Digital Production Color Presses
The stochastic screen has traditionally been used to preserve images with fine features as well as to reduce printing Moiré of images that contain input periodic structures. However, the stochastic screen also has experienced more difficulty in maintaining color stability in long press runs. Kodak, using its multilevel printing architecture, has created a new stochastic screening technology, wi...
متن کاملA Unified Framework for Digital Halftoning and Dither Mask Construction: Variations on a Theme and Implementation Issues
We present a unified algorithmic framework for some classes of digital halftoning algorithms including Direct Binary Search (DBS) and dither mask generation algorithms such as Void and Cluster, BIPPSMA, and clustered dot with blue noise interpolation. Although these algorithms are different and used in different ways, e.g. Direct Binary Search is a global halftoning process, whereas dither mask...
متن کاملA Fast Green Noise Digital Halftoning Algorithm with Section-oriented Multiscale Error Diffusion
Printing systems with poor and unstable dot gain make blue noise halftoning inappropriate to be used to generate halftone outputs for them, and green noise halftoning is preferred in such a case. Recently, a green noise halftoning with multiscale error diffusion (FMEDg) is proposed for this scenario. Extensive analysis and simulation results show that it can provide better halftoning performanc...
